2. Thomas Midgley, Jr. - A notable mechanical engineer and chemist, having made many contributions to his field. In 1940, He contracted poliomyelitis and was severely disabled. He invented a pulley system so that others could help him out of bed easier. He accidentally strangled himself in its ropes in 1944.
3. Sieur Freminet - Invented a rebreathing device for scuba drivers in 1772. The device would recycle exhaled air from inside of a barrel. It was the first self-contained air device. After being inside his own invention for 20 minutes, Freminet died from lack of oxygen.
4. Marie Curie - A renowned chemist and the first woman to win the Nobel prize, she discovered polonium and radium. She often carried around radioactive isotopes in test tubes in her pockets. She enjoyed the faint light they gave off in the dark. She died of aplastic anemia in 1934, a result of her exposure to radiation.
5. William Bullock - Inventor of the rotary printing press, he revolutionized the printing industry at the time. While attempting to repair one of his machines, Bullock tried to kick a pulley back into place. The machine caught bullock's foot and crushed it. His foot became gangrenous and he died while it was being amputated.
6. Henry Winstanley - A painter and engineer. He designed the first Eddystone lighthouse. He invested confidence into his construction and said he would shelter himself from "The Greatest Storm There Ever Was" in his lighthouse. In 1703 During a great storm, his lighthouse collapsed with him inside, Killing him.
7. Karel Soucek - Famous for having invented a large barrel that kept him alive as he rode over Niagara Falls. During another stunt in 1985, Soucek got into his barrel and dropped 180 feet into a tank of water at the Houston Astrodome. The barrel slammed into the rim of the tank accidentally. Soucek had to be cut free, only to die soon after severe injuries. Even Knievel tried to convince Soucek not to go through with the stunt.
8. Max Valier - A rocketry pioneer he assisted in the creation of rocket-powered vehicles. Valier performed the first successful test drive of a rocket car with liquid propulsion, In 1930. Less than a month later, an alcohol-fueled rocket exploded on verier's test bench, Killing him.
9. Sylvester H. Roper - Created the " Roper steam velocipede", a bicycle-powered by steam. The bicycle was designed with a coal-fired boiler between its wheels. While demonstrating one of his machines in 1896, he abruptly fell off and died. It is believed the fall caused a heart attack.
10. Horace Lawson Hunley - Hunley helped to develop early hand-powered submarines during the American civil war. In 1863, Hunley took command of a crew during an exercise on his own submarine, named The H.L.Hunley. It began to sink and trapped Hunley & the 7 other crew members inside. They died at the bottom of the Charleston harbor.
